As the heat wave leaves us reeling, it is time to look back at the practical steps that can be taken to beat the summer heat.
The body becomes dehydrated faster during scorching hot summer months and it is very easy to suffer from the after effects of dehydration. The following tips can help you keep cool and stay healthy all summer long:
1. Apply sunscreen or wear a hat when going out
When stepping out in the sun, you should wear a generous dose of sun cream to protect yourself from harmful ultraviolet rays and prevent skin cancer. Using a hat will also ensure protection against the sun.
2. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated
You should aim to drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water a day to replenish your body’s lost fluids. Staying hydrated during the summer season will protect you from heat exhaustion. You should not wait until you’re feeling thirsty to drink water!
3. Wear loose & light-coloured clothing
Loose-fitting and light-coloured cotton clothes are more ideal during summer as they help to reduce sweating and reflect heat waves away from our body, thus keeping the body cool.
4. Include Salads in your diet regularly
Consuming leafy vegetables and salads more often will also help you to stay cool. They contain a significant amount of water and can actually thin the blood, which has a cooling effect on the body.
5. Limit your outdoor activities during midday
It is recommended to restrict outdoor activities during peak sun hours. Schedule your outings and workouts early in the morning or late in the evening when the temperature is much cooler.
6. Keep rooms cool after dark by turning off lights
During summer, you should take advantage of natural light as much as possible and opt to using lights minimally at night. Light bulbs emit a lot of heat energy which in turn heat up the house.
